Free Agency

And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.” Joshua 24:15

NBA free agency season will begin on July 1, 2019. During that time, teams will be permitted to contact free agents (restricted or unrestricted) to convince them to join their teams. Superstar free agents will be offered max deals north of $200 million for 4 to 5 years. The most coveted free agents this year are Kawhi Leonard, Kevin Durant, Klay Thompson, and Jimmy Butler. Many teams are doing their best to try to land one of these guys so they can win an NBA championship.

Spiritually speaking, free agency season starts the moment we enter this world. Each of us is highly recruited by the Devil or by God. God made the ultimate offer by sending his Son, Jesus Christ, to give us eternal life. That is an offer the Devil has not been able to match. Yet there are far more people that have not accepted God’s offer.

Unlike NBA teams that offer fame and fortune, God offers protection, everlasting peace, eternal life, eternal joy, in addition to supplying all our needs according to his riches in glory. Though the Devil tries to duplicate God’s offer, he cannot offer eternal life. He provides no guarantees and has the reputation of reneging on his offer because he is the father of lies.

An NBA season consists of 82 regular season games, plus the playoffs. A player can be injured during the regular season and fall out of favor with his team and ultimately be traded to another team. God will never trade us no matter how badly we messed up. He is always faithful in his love for us. We are his precious creation and the sheep of his pasture. God paid the ultimate price for us to join the team. He redeemed us by the blood of his Son, and no offer can match the worth of Jesus’ precious blood.

In today’s text, Joshua reminds the Israelites they are free to choose which God they want to serve. He cautions them to choose the God of heaven instead of the false gods their fathers served in the region beyond the River or the gods of the Amorites. Joshua makes it clear that he and his household are going to serve the Lord.

Despite all that God had done for the Israelites, they could not make up their minds about which team they should join—God’s team or the Devil’s team. Joshua told them they could not be in both teams and had to make a choice. After all, God gave them the best offer. He gave them the Promised Land filled with milk, honey, and every necessary resource they would need. Because of God, they defeated all their enemies. God protected them from wild animals and beasts while they traveled through the wilderness. He gave them food when they were hungry and water when they were thirsty.

The point here is that we are all free to choose which team we want to join—God or the Devil. Though God has already made his most excellent pitch for us to join his team by sending Jesus Christ to dies for us, he has never stopped trying to recruit those who are indifferent to his offer. In the meantime, the Devil is also busy recruiting. His offers can be very attractive to some, though they always come with a destructive consequence.

Like Joshua, we need to continue reminding people that they should choose the Lord and not the gods of this world. We have to tell them that the Devil’s offer is a losing proposition with eternal consequences. They need to know that they do not have the luxury to remain neutral in this cosmic battle. We have to remind them that Jesus offers a blessed assurance of eternal life, and godly insurance that they will be protected against the attacks of the enemy.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, I pray for those who have not chosen to join your heavenly team. Please send messengers to remind them of the excellent benefits they will have when they become members of the body of Christs.
