Facing your Giants

Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David.

He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. He said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 1 Samuel 17: 42-44

We will all face giants throughout life. These giants are overwhelming circumstances against which we feel powerless. They are bigger than life type of adversity that cannot be dismissed. These giants can consume our energy, they test our faith, and they force us to question our resiliency.

The good news is that giants can be slain. We have to resist the temptation to make our giants bigger than they are. Nor should we live in fear of our giants. Instead, we have to find the courage to face our giants so we can defeat them.

The toughest challenge for most people is to face their giants because they are paralyzed with fear. Giants are bullies that rely on their size and ferociousness to scare people from challenging them. They huff and puff to create panic so their adversary can run away instead of standing their ground.

In today’s text, David marches against Goliath, the giant who has been terrorizing King Saul and his army. Goliath has been huffing and puffing while the Israelites have retreated out of fear of this giant. The Israelites were so scared of Goliath, they were afraid to go to war against him and the Philistines.

Facing our giants is half of the battle. From the moment David decided to face Goliath, he was well on his way to victory. David faced Goliath without a sword or shield. Goliath was both surprised and incensed to see that someone like David would dare challenge him. David shattered Goliath’s overconfidence. He turned the table on Goliath and courageously challenged him to a fight to the death.

David’s confidence came from his faith and not his size or military skill. He knew that he could not defeat the giant by his own power or might. Therefore, he challenged the giant in the name of the God of heaven.

We should not try to face our giants with our own strength. Our giants cannot be defeated by our fortune or our education or our connection. David was sent to face Goliath on behalf of King Saul. Yet he could not rely on the Israelite army or the authority of the King. David found the courage to face Goliath from his faith in God.

Perhaps you are facing the giant of cancer, and modern medicine, with all its progress, cannot help you. Trust God! It is God who designed your body and can neutralize the cancer cells that are wreaking havoc in your body. If you are facing a giant in your finances, look to God. The earth and everything in it belong to him. Those that are facing giants in their marriage, or they employment, or in their ministry, should look to God for the courage to face their giants. Nothing is impossible to those who believe in the Omnipotence of God.

It is not a good idea to panic when facing a giant. Giants should not see the fear in us. They feed off fear. Don’t waste your time crying and worrying when dealing with a giant. So, dry your tears and shed your fears so you can get the upper hand against your giant. A giant is only as big as we make it. Our God is bigger and stronger than any giant we face. Therefore, we should face our giants in the name of the Lord. Then stand back and watch God slay our giant for us by faith.

Prayer- Blessed Lord, please touch brothers and sisters that are struggling against the giant of cancer and other terminal diseases. Give them the faith to trust that they can defeat their giant in the name of Jesus.
