A Healthy Obsession

Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. Deuteronomy 6:5 KJV

Obsession is defined as a persistent disturbing preoccupation with a person or thing. When someone is genuinely obsessed, their interest has become compulsive, and they have begun to lose control over it. A synonym of obsession is consuming passion. They type of passion that makes one throw caution to the wind, as they remain fixated on the object of obsession.

My interpretation of Deuteronomy 6:5 is that God is asking his people to develop a healthy obsession with him. He is asking them to do more than just love him. He wants them to have a consuming passion for Him.

Without a healthy obsession with God, it is impossible to please him. We should be thinking about God day and night. The desire to please him should be our foremost desire and should preoccupy our thoughts. Our obsession with God should fuel our worship, and fan the flame of our fire to do his kingdom work.

During my prayer walk this morning, the Holy Spirit asked me if God is the apple of my eye. He wanted me to confirm that I have a healthy obsession for the Almighty. I never really thought about that before. However, that is indeed a relevant question for those who want to cultivate a relationship of loving union with God.

Is God the first person you think about when you wake up in the morning, and the last person you think about at night? Is pleasing him the foremost priority of your life? Are you willing to die for him? Do you have a persistent preoccupation with the Lord that some people may find disturbing?

That is exactly what God is asking of us in today’s text. He wants us to have a compulsive interest in him. A healthy obsession for God compels us to do everything for him in excellence. Those who are obsessed with the Lord gladly and cheerfully share of their time, talents, and treasure for the building of his kingdom. They do not have to be guilt into giving, and they do not need to be prodded to serve.

In Psalm 119, the Psalmist proclaims his obsession with God. In verse 81, he says, “my soul faints with longing for your salvation.” In verse 14, he proclaims, “I rejoice in following your statutes as one rejoices in great riches. These are confessions of the heart of someone with a healthy obsession with the Lord. They are not just lyrics but romantic expressions.

God is the apple of my eye. He is the only obsession in my life. I am persistently—some would say, disturbingly—preoccupied with thoughts of him. The reason is that God is obsessed with me. My wellbeing is his priority. The Lord is passionate about spiritual maturity. He manages every second of every minute of every hour of my life. There is not an hour that God is not with me. He knew me before I was born and, and set me apart for the life he purposed me to live. God has carefully orchestrated every detail of my life.

God is obsessed with all of his creation. He is preoccupied with our protection from demonic attacks. He is concerned about our physical wellbeing and our spiritual destination. The Lord is so obsessed with us that he sacrificed his Only Begotten Son so we can spend eternity with Him in heaven.

Some Christians are ashamed to let others know they are believers. Others say they do not wear their faith on their sleeves—so to speak. They are very private about their spirituality and very reserved about their allegiance to Jesus Christ. However, how can one love God with all their heart, and with all their soul, and with all their strength, and not make it evident for all to see? Since Jesus was not ashamed to display the depth of his love for me by dying on a dirty and rugged cross, I do not have any issue with letting the world see and know that I have a persistent preoccupation with my Lord.

Prayer- Heavenly Father, thank you for loving us the way that you do. May we learn to cultivate a healthy obsession with you that will fuel our obedience and service to your name.
