Return To God!

“Even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting and weeping and mourning.” Rend your heart and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love, and he relents from sending calamity. Joel 2:12-13

Since the shooting of 26 innocent individuals at Sandy hook elementary school there’s been a lot of discussion about gun control. Many in the media and national politics have sought to use this unfortunate incident to attack the pro-gun lobby that is spearheaded by the NRA. The national outcry for limiting the availability of semi-automatic firearms to the public has gained momentum. Many gun owners are demanding that the government take a more proactive role in the gun debate by passing sensible laws that would set a national standard for gun ownership and prevent people with mental disease from owning guns.

There is yet another sector of American society that is pushing for a larger debate about the culture of violence that is all too accepted and celebrated in our society. They want the media, Hollywood, the game and entertainment industry to share some of the blame and play a more positive role in helping to change our culture of violence. They want more civility in national politics as part of a concerted effort to strengthen civil society.

This is a very healthy and necessary public debate that is well overdue in American society. After all, “according to the Small Arms Survey, the estimated total number of guns held by U.S. civilians is 270 million -- 88.9 firearms per 100 people. The country with the second-most guns is India, with an estimated 46 million guns in private hands -- or about four firearms for every 100 people. The U.S., with 4.5 percent of the world population, accounts for about 40 percent of the planet's civilian firearms, said Dr. Garen Wintemute, of the University of California, Davis, Medical Center.”

Yet, I strongly believe that is not the crux of the problem. Limiting gun ownership and changing the tenor of political discourse in America is not going to fix the decadence in American society. The real problem in America is not gun, but spiritual disobedience and decay. Americans need to return to God if they are going to fix the worsening malaise in American society.

As it stands, America is outside of the circumference of God’s Divine protection because its people have forsaken the real God of heaven to worship idols and prostitute themselves to the Baals of this world. “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another (Romans 1:24).” Many have “exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised ( Romans 1:25).”

Many have become obstinate in their rejection of God and His holy word. They fought and succeeded in taking prayer out of schools and the public domain. They passed legislations that are in direct opposition to God’s will. With Hollywood on their side and the media propaganda machine working incessantly to misinform the masses, they’ve launched a counteroffensive against Christian Conservatism that has succeeded, in part, because the Church has lost its legitimacy and moral authority as a representative of God on earth. This is due in part because the Church hasn’t been able to clean up its own house as more church goers are being victimized by the Clergy.

America’s flirtation with religious apostasy has opened the portal for demons and demonic forces to run amuck in every sector of American society. These demons come to steal, kill and destroy. They feed off hatred and violence, and are thirsty for the blood of the innocent. The only way to stop the carnage they can cause is by returning to God and allowing His Holy Spirit to saturate every sector of our society with His love and Holy presence. These demons cannot be bound by anti-gun laws. Washington cannot stop them. They are far more insidious and evil in their plan to turn America into their playground where rape, murder, violence, and wickedness are the norm.

They are also very cunning. They want Americans to be ensnared in the debate about guns and their availability in America. They want to pit the pro gun lobby against the advocates of gun control to keep us distracted from the real problem.

The real problem is the growing sense of despair and spiritual alienation that many are experiencing. Many are experiencing a sense of emptiness and helpless that fame and fortune cannot fix. They are being over-medicated and intoxicated in order to escape from their existential angst. They are filled with guilt and financial debt. Many have been morally molested by the Hollywood establishment with its sleazy and depraved caricature of human sexuality and obsession with violence. Others are spiritually battered by the very Church they should look to in times of crisis.

Therefore, many people are feeling afraid. They can’t trust anyone or anything because they are acutely aware of the moral decay that is all around them. They run to their guns because that’s the only way they can feel safe, even though it is that very gun that is exacerbating the growing fear in American society. They stop trusting political and religious leaders because they can see their dishonest.

What’s the real solution? Americans should return to God with weeping and fasting. As Nehemiah did in the Old Testament, we should cry out to God and beg for His forgiveness. We should stop looking at Washington to fix our problem since Obama is not Jesus. We have to stop putting our hope on Wall Street. Yes, many of us have to stop feeding ourselves a steady diet of the gospel according to Oprah. We can’t look to Hollywood to fix the cultural mess that it has helped to foster and is all too willing to allow to fester.

Those who peddle the prosperity ideology in the Church are going to have to stop confusing the masses with this delusion of grandeur. Those who want to turn their congregation into their private harem have to be dismissed and exposed as enemies of God. The advocates of atheism and secular humanism have to be challenged with biblically based truth for the sake of spiritual edification. There should be a spiritual revival in every city and an outpouring of spiritual repentance all across the country.

If we don’t take steps to align ourselves with the Will and Word of God, America will end up like the great Empires of old. It will not only lose its legitimacy as a world leader, but its decadence and violence will cause God to further distance Himself from it until it becomes so saturated with wickedness that God will have to wipe it out like Sodom and Gomorrah.

So yes, the proliferation of gun ownership is partly to blame for the massacre at Sandy hook Elementary school. No; gun control will not end gun violence and the erosion of moral ethics in America. Only God can do that. It’s time we tell all the media outlets to stop their fascination with the violence in Connecticut, and start focusing on the spiritual sickness of America as a whole. Instead of talking about legislation, we should be talking about spiritual edification. For, that is the only way to fight the powers and principalities that have been unleashed to steal, kill, and destroy in America.
